From Blank Canvas to Award-Winning Home: How I Transformed a Surrey New Build
Every home has a story, and one of my proudest moments as a designer came when a young family in Surrey asked me to help them turn their brand-new house into a warm, characterful home.
On paper, it was everything they wanted: a spacious new build with room for their growing family. But like many new builds, it felt a little too blank. White walls, no architectural detail, and nowhere near enough storage for family life.
They dreamed of a home that reflected their love of the Studio McGee aesthetic - clean lines, timeless finishes, and just the right balance between elegance and comfort. The challenge? Making a practical family home feel stylish, without losing the warmth and functionality they needed day to day.
Putting the finishing touches to the design..
Designing a Family-Friendly Feature
The heart of the design was a bespoke cabinet and seating area. I wanted to give them more than just storage, I wanted a piece that would bring the whole room together.
The solution was to create a built-in design with open shelving for display, closed cupboards for toys and clutter, and bench seats that could double as a cosy reading nook. By adding details like a classic cornice, the unit immediately gave the space the architectural character it was missing.
Suddenly, this modern new build had depth, charm, and a sense of permanence. It felt less like a show home and more like their home.
Collaboration & Connection
What made this project so special wasn’t just the end result, but the journey. As a mum myself, I understood exactly what this family needed from their home - storage that actually works, finishes that can stand up to daily life, and spaces that still feel beautiful after a day of kids’ toys and family chaos.
We worked closely together, exploring different finishes and options until we found the perfect fit. My client trusted me to guide her, but it was always a collaboration. By the end, we hadn’t just created a home she loved, we’d built a friendship.
An Award-Winning Design
This project went on to be recognised with an award for Best Design out of 70 designers at a leading interior design company. It was such a proud moment, not just because of the accolade, but because it showed how thoughtful, family-centred design can be both practical and beautiful.
For me, the award wasn’t just about the cabinetry or the finishes, it was about creating a home that worked perfectly for the people living in it.
My Approach
Every project I take on is about more than just “making things look pretty.” It’s about listening, understanding how you live, and then designing spaces that solve problems while reflecting your style.
Practicality – I design with family life in mind, from clever storage to durable finishes.
Character – Whether it’s a new build or a period property, I love adding details that give your home soul.
Collaboration – I don’t impose a “look.” I guide, inspire, and refine, but the result always feels like you.
Approachability – Many of my clients start as strangers and end as friends. The process should feel enjoyable, not intimidating.
